Welcome to our first discussion of Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. I hope you have enjoyed entering into Lewis’ concept of a science fiction story.
Just to give a little background about the book: C. S. Lewis and his friend, J. R. R. Tolkien decided in 1936 that one of them would write a space travel story and one of them would write a time travel story. They famously decided who would write which by tossing a coin.
With that in mind, you’ll see both in the dedication and throughout the book, references to not only space travel but also time travel.
Also, keep in mind that Lewis wrote this book in the 1930s, decades before Sputnik, the Gemini missions, and the Apollo missions.
